When I was in my twenties, someone came up with
the idea for these Magic Eye Paintings. The idea was, some people could
see hidden things by looking at them in a special way. I never saw much
of anything, though I spent five or ten minutes sometimes just staring
and squinting and feeling foolish. Looking for her was like that. It
always happened in passing. I’d be going through the block where
she lived on the bus or in a car and I’d peer out, trying to see
each face at once, sometimes thinking I’d seen her, but in the
end seeing nothing.
